Google Glass has been on the market for a while now, but it has yet to sway consumers en masse. Out to challenge it, Sony is developing a device you can attach to any piece of eyewear.
Sony's "Single-Lens Display Module" shares many of Google Glass' features. The detachable module comes equipped with a high-resolution colour OLED microdisplay, a micro-optical unit that brings out the display's image quality, as well as a processor similar to those found in smartphones.
The novelty is that you now have the option of clipping it onto anything from your normal specs and shades to ski goggles. This, according to Sony, allows the user more flexibility, as you won't be tied into wearing a specific prescription pair -- you can clip on or store away the Sony device accordingly. What's more, the makers claim that the small sub-window, which displays the visual information, will not obstruct your field of vision.
Sony wants the device to be seamlessly absorbed into your daily life and activities, and the company is aiming to mass-produce this display module within the coming year. The company also hopes to expand the market for this detachable wearable device by targeting sectors as far ranging as sports, entertainment, and electronics manufacturing.
